A few things I’ve learned about life from learning new skills

    • On changing direction (making change):
      • From learning to drive a bus –It is easier to turn a moving vehicle than a stationary one. Keep moving.
    • On balance:
      • From learning to ride a bike – It is easier to stay balanced on a bike when focusing far ahead rather than immediately in front of me (and certainly easier than focusing behind :-)). Look forward
      • From learning to ride a unicycle – It is easier to balance a moving unicycle than a stationary one. Keep moving
      • From learning to walk on a slack line – When walking on a slack line it is important to provide adequate and appropriate counter-balance. Follow the Goldilocks principle: not too much and not too little. To regain balance make small adjustments rather than big ones.
    • On focus:
      • From learning to play Basketball – Sometimes I need to focus on what is far away; the goal.
      • From learning to play soccer – Sometimes I need to focus on what is near at hand; the means or tools necessary to achieve the goal.
      • From learning to play a multitude of sports – Always be aware of when to focus where. Sometimes near, sometimes far and sometimes in the periphery; not straight on. And it is quite possible to split or vary my focus. Different circumstances require different areas of focus. Learn the difference.
